Mental Health Awareness and Support

Millions of people are affected by mental illness each year, including your peers, family members, and friends. We want you to know that if you or another individual you know are struggling with a mental illness, you are not alone and there are people who can help. Below you will find information on mental health awareness, how to help a friend struggling with mental illness, and a list of contacts to reach out to for help.

  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year

  • 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24

  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34 

  • 16.5% of U.S. youth aged 6-17 experienced a mental health disorder in 2016 (7.7 million people)

Read through NAMI’s Student Guide to Mental Health to learn about the 10 Common Warning Signs that someone could be struggling with a mental health issue.

  • Butler County’s 24hr Crisis Hotline: 1-844-4CRISIS (1-844-427-4747)

  • Suicide and Crisis Hotline: 513-281-2273 

  • National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255

  • SAMHSA’s National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357) A free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish)

  • NAMI Helpline: 800-950-NAMI (6264)  Available Mon-Fri from 10am-6pm

  • Crisis Text Line:  Text HOME to 741741. Provides free, confidential support via text message 24/7 to those in crisis situations. You’ll text with a trained Crisis Counselor.

  • The Trevor Project: (866) 488-7386  provides free, confidential support 24/7 to LGBTQ youth via a helpline, text, and online messaging system

  • Teen Health & Wellness provides a list of hotlines to receive help for specific mental health disorders and other issues.
