Alexa Funke stands on stage as she receives her award
Last month, MES student Alexa Funke traveled to Columbus where she was recognized as Ohio’s statewide sixth grade winner of the 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Essay & Multimedia Contest is hosted by the Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) and is open to all Ohio students in grades 6 - 12. This contest is intended to encourage students to reflect upon Dr. King’s life, philosophy and impact on the Civil Rights movement and present day America. It is meant to challenge students to think about how civil rights and diversity affect their lives and how they can continue the work of Dr. King in their own way.

OCRC received hundreds of entries, but Alexa is one of only 15 Ohio students that were chosen as winners and honored during a special ceremony at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Training Academy. A poster-sized version of her essay provided by the State of Ohio is now on display on Main Street just outside of the elementary library.
