Dear Monroe Families RE: TikTok Challenge

Dear Monroe Families,

District officials have learned of a national social media “challenge” that is
rumored to take place on Friday, December 17, 2021. The challenge is for
students to make a threat to their local schools across the nation.

Currently, we are unaware of any specific threats towards Monroe schools or
students. While we understand that this event is only a rumor, we know that
social media is a powerful tool used to influence others - and often, not for
the good. It is always important to remain vigilant when it involves these
types of rumors about alleged “threats.”

I want to reiterate again that there have been NO specific threats that we are
aware of towards Monroe schools, but we have been in constant communication
with the Monroe Police Department and they will have additional police
presence in the area as an extra precaution.

We would like to remind parents and students about the significant
consequences if such conduct occurs. If a student is found to be engaging in
any of these behaviors, we will follow the code of conduct which will result
in severe disciplinary action as well as intervention by law enforcement.

Although we know about the challenges out on social media, we have great kids
here in Monroe, and I am confident that the overwhelming majority of them
choose to do the right thing.

If you have any specific questions, please reach out to your child’s school
principal. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation to keep our
kids safe.

Thank you,
J. Robert Buskirk
Superintendent
