There is a vacancy on the Monroe Local Schools Board of Education, due to the resignation of Mr. Tom Birdwell, and the remaining board members have 30 days to fill the position.
Board President,Tom Leeds, said “ Mr. Birdwell, who is in the final year of his four year term has resigned, effective March 23, 2015. According to State Law and Board Policy, the board must begin the process to replace Mr. Birdwell soon, and name the replacement within thirty days from the effective date of the resignation”. The newly appointed board member will serve until January 1, 2016.
Mr. Birdwell was first elected as a board member when the district separated from the Middletown City Schools and became their own independent local school district in 2001. He was actively involved in the construction of the current 2-12 school building on Yankee Road while serving two terms until 2008. During that time, he also served as Monroe’s representative to the Butler Tech Board of Education. Tom was re-elected in November of 2011 for another four year term. He submitted his resignation for personal health reasons.
“Mr. Birdwell is very knowledgeable in many areas. He always considered the impact a decision would have on the public, the students, and the staff, before he would make his decision. We are sorry his health has caused him to resign and we certainly wish him well” said board president, Tom Leeds.

According to the Ohio School Boards Association, people serving on school boards in Ohio must be at least 18 years old, district residents and registered voters. If they wish to continue to serve on the school board, they will stand for election in the next general election.
All applications are due to the Board Office by Friday, April 3, 2015. Interviews with applicatants will be held on April 13, 2015. Board president, Tom Leeds, said the board will review all applications and decide on the replacement at the April 20th board meeting.
